Home Office

Mood Board

We designed this basement conversion ADU for a home office. There are not a lot of basements in California homes, however there are some, and you can build a house with a basement as long as the foundation is pinned to bedrock. If you are going to put a bathroom in the basement, then your sewer line will need to be deeper than the average six feet deep. The style for this design is modern glam mixed with traditional comfort. The color story is neutral with pops of sage green and gold metal finishes. The flooring is a porcelain tile that looks like ash wood planks. Hardwood flooring is not the best choice for a basement, as moisture issues can cause it to warp. The walls are white. It makes for a bright and calm space to work in, even though it is in a basement space, with only one small window to bring in natural light. We recommend waterproofing basement walls before painting them. We love the design for this home office! Who wouldn't want to go work in this space every day? When our clients work with us, all of the shopping list items come with details such as descriptions, pricing, dimensions and how we recommend using the items in their space.

Floor Plan

Here is the floor plan for the home office. You can see where the stairs lead from the home office space, up to the main house. The desk sits in front of the one window in this space. Since the house is a split-level, the basement is under a raised level and therefore actually several feet out of the ground, allowing for a not huge, but reasonably sized window. This does help to bring some natural light in to the room. We have the console on the wall behind the desk to store files and supplies. A copy machine can also sit on this console. And the etagere to the side of the desk for books, catalogs, samples and anything else needed for the office. We recommend adding some recessed ceiling lights in this office space as well for more general lighting. Probably four would do the trick.
